Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about event power distribution.
What is BS7909 and why is it important?
BS7909:2023 is the UK Code of Practice for temporary electrical systems for entertainment and related purposes. It sets the safety standards for all temporary electrical installations at events, festivals, and venues. Compliance with BS7909 ensures your event meets insurance requirements, venue regulations, and most importantly, keeps everyone safe from electrical hazards.
What size generator do I need for my event?
Generator sizing depends on your total power load. Our team will perform detailed load calculations based on your lighting, sound, catering equipment, and any other electrical requirements. As a rough guide: small weddings (5-20kVA), medium events (20-60kVA), large festivals (60-125kVA+). We always recommend oversizing slightly to allow for headroom and power spikes.
Do you provide generators or just distribution?
We provide comprehensive power distribution services including distro boxes, cables, and installation. For generators, we partner with Kenton Hughes to source the exact capacity and type you need. This partnership approach ensures you get the best generator for your specific requirements while benefiting from our expertise in power distribution and BS7909 compliance.
What's the difference between single-phase and three-phase power?
Single-phase power is standard 230V domestic supply, suitable for smaller events and individual equipment. Three-phase power delivers higher capacity (400V) across three separate phases, essential for large sound systems, stage lighting rigs, and high-power equipment. Three-phase also allows better load balancing across the distribution system. We can advise which type suits your event needs.
How far in advance should I book power services?
We recommend booking 4-6 weeks in advance for most events, especially during peak season (May-September). For large festivals or events requiring significant generator capacity, 8-12 weeks notice is ideal. This allows time for load calculations, risk assessments, and securing the right equipment. However, we can often accommodate last-minute requests subject to availability.
What documentation do you provide?
We provide comprehensive documentation including: electrical installation certificates, PAT test certificates, risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), load calculations, electrical schematics, and as-built drawings. All documentation is BS7909 compliant and suitable for submission to venues, local authorities, and insurance companies.
Can you work with my venue's existing power supply?
Yes, absolutely. We can work with existing venue power supplies (mains electricity) and supplement with generators where needed. We'll conduct a site survey to assess the available power capacity and design a distribution system that makes best use of existing infrastructure while ensuring adequate capacity for your event requirements.
What happens if there's a power failure during my event?
We design all systems with redundancy and protection in mind. Our distribution units include MCB (Miniature Circuit Breakers), RCD (Residual Current Device), and RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent) protection to prevent overloads, short circuits, and earth faults. RCBOs combine the functionality of both MCBs and RCDs in a single device, providing comprehensive circuit protection. For critical events, we can provide backup generators with automatic changeover systems. Our technicians are on-site or on-call throughout your event to resolve any issues immediately.
